There are several similar species of "Bottle Gentian" or "Closed Gentian", named because the flowers petals stay together. The gentians provide some of the last subtle colors of the summer and early autumn, growing on road and trail sides where they get at least some sun. Gentians are also popular in wildflower gardens and their pleasant blue and purple is not found on other flowers blooming in that season.
