Blue Cohosh
Caulophyllum thalictroides
Blooms April to May
The small flowers of Blue Cohosh are not very noticeable, even in the sparse early spring forest. Like it's namesake, Black Cohosh, this plant has a rich history as a natural medicine. Methylcytisine, an alkaloid found in the root of the plant is capable of increasing blood pressure and causing hyperglycemia. There are also glycosides present that stimulate uterine contractions. Not for use during pregnancy.
